Introducing the Pantone Color of the Year

It’s no secret that color plays a vital role in our lives. As artists, color is even more significant, as it can be a source of inspiration, creativity and meaning in our work.

Each year for the past two decades, the Pantone Institute of Color announces a “Color of the Year” meant to reflect current events and trends within our culture. To determine the color of the year, color experts examine pop culture, entertainment, films, fashion, design, travel and other avenues to find new and exciting color influences.

This year, for the first time ever, Pantone created a new color to hold the title of Color of the Year: Very Peri. PANTONE 17-3938 Very Peri is a gorgeous new member of the blue color family, boasting violet red undertones.

“The Pantone Color of the Year reflects what is taking place in our global culture, expressing what people are looking for that color can hope to answer.” added Laurie Pressman, Vice President of the Pantone Color Institute. “Creating a new color for the first time in the history of our Pantone Color of the Year educational color program reflects the global innovation and transformation taking place. As society continues to recognize color as a critical form of communication, and a way to express and affect ideas and emotions and engage and connect, the complexity of this new red violet infused blue hue highlights the expansive possibilities that lay before us.”

Very Peri is meant to symbolize this very transitional time, as digital and physical lives merge and as we find new and exciting ways to share our creativity with the world – both online and in person.
